Kidney diseases are very common all throughout the world. According to the data by World Health Organization “The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2015 study estimated that 1.2 million deaths, 19 million disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and 18 million years of life lost from cardiovascular diseases were directly attributable to reduced glomerular filtration rates”. It is thus extremely important for medical students to be well versed with kidney diseases and infections that affect kidneys and the urogenital system.
This course on Diseases of the Urogenital System covers almost all infections, diseases and disorders of the kidneys and other parts of the urogenital system like the prostate, bladder etc. Even though the subject is vast and complex, a detailed yet easily comprehensible content on each disease has been prepared with the aim to make an undergraduate learner grasp each and every concept thoroughly and deeply.
Importance:
A. Kidney diseases, though common, are silent mostly until the kidneys have been damaged to the extent that they are only minimally functional. In such situations it is important for the future medical practitioners to be thorough with each and every sign and symptom which indicates some pathology in the kidneys or the urogenital system.
B. Kidneys are sturdy organs and hence their pathology is usually seen secondary to diseases of the other systems and organs like nephropathy which occurs after persistent hypertension or diabetes. It is important to understand diseases of the urogenital system so that the learner may be able to grasp the renal or urogenital complications of diseases of other systems in the body.
