Unravelling the Nervous System: Cerebral Disorders - Part 2

It was Sir Jay Holder, who once said, “The nervous system holds the key to the body’s incredible potential to heal itself.” This is clarified by Dr. Hahnemann himself in §16 of the Organon of Medicine, where he says, “… spirit-like alternative powers of the serviceable medicines acting upon our spirit-like vital force, which perceives them through the medium of the sentient faculty of the nerves everywhere present in the organism …” So, these two quotes must tell you the role played by the human nervous system in healing the sick. But, the human nervous system is not only important, it is also very complex. So, this course aims to unravel the nervous system – especially the disorders of the brain. We will go through a number of neurodegenerative disorders affecting the cerebrum, cerebellum and motor neurons in detail.

The course primarily deals with a number of academically and clinically important cerebral neurodegenerative disorders. It discusses the disorders in detail including the aetiology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis and management for each of them.

  • 1. Neurodegenerative Disorders - Dementia & Alzheimer’s Disease   FREE 46 min

    This module includes an introduction to Neurodegenerative Disorders along with discussions on the general clinical characteristics, pathological features and the clinical classification of neurodegenerative diseases. Then there will be a detailed discussion on 2 disorders – Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.

  • 3. Neurodegenerative Disorders - Vascular Dementia 35 min

    In this module, the 2nd most common cause of dementia in the elderly, that is Vascular Dementia will be talked about in detail. The epidemiology, risk factors, aetiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, prevention and prognosis of Vascular Dementia are discussed.

  • 4. Neurodegenerative Disorders - Dementia with Lewy Bodies 36 min

    This module will talk about another common dementing disorder – Dementia with Lewy Bodies, including the epidemiology, aetiopathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis of Dementia with Lewy Bodies.

    This module starts the discussion on a number of Parkinsonian syndromes that also present with Parkinsonism together constituting – the Atypical Parkinsonism Disorders. The aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and management of 2 disorders - Multiple System Atrophy and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) are included.

  • 7. Neurodegenerative Disorders - Other Parkinsonian Syndromes Part 2 36 min

    This module continues the discussion on the Parkinsonian Syndromes. It starts with Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), another Atypical Parkinsonian disorder talking about its History, Epidemiology, Aetiopathogenesis, Clinical Features, Diagnosis and Management. Then Drug-induced Parkinsonism and Dopa-Responsive Dystonia have also been discussed.

  • 8. Neurodegenerative Disorders - Tremor Disorders 46 min

    This module begins the discussion on Hyperkinetic movement disorders with the topic of Tremor Disorders. It starts with an introduction and classification of tremors. Then the features of various tremor syndromes are explained thoroughly with emphasis upon the clinical features, investigations, and management of each. In the end of this module the diagnosis and assessment of a case of Tremor is also discussed.

In the end, Dystonic storm is also discussed.

  • 11. Neurodegenerative Disorders - Tics & Myoclonus 58 min

    This module talks about 2 hyperkinetic disorders - Tics & Myoclonus. Tics and Tourette’s syndrome are discussed simultaneously covering the epidemiology, history, aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and management for both of these. And then under the topic of myoclonus, its epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management is discussed in detail.

    This module deals with the disorders that can present with a combination of Parkinsonism and hyperkinetic movements – Wilson’s Disease & Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation (NBIA). It covers the epidemiology, aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management and prognosis of Wilson’s Disease in detail. Then the various subtypes of NBIA, including the primary disorders of iron metabolism and the secondary causes of disturbed iron homeostasis within the brain are discussed.

  • 14. Neurodegenerative Disorders – Motor Neuron Disease 43 min

    This module begins the discussion on another common neurodegenerative disorder – Motor Neuron Disease, including the epidemiology, aetiopathogenesis, pathology, clinical features, investigations, and management of MND in general. Then Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is discussed in detail covering its epidemiology, history, aetiology, pathology, clinical features, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and management as well.

  • 15. Neurodegenerative Disorders – Other Motor Neuron Diseases 44 min

    This module continues the discussion on Motor Neuron Diseases in which Progressive Bulbar Palsy and its 2 forms - Kennedy’s Disease and Fazio-Londe Disease are discussed in detail. After that, Progressive Muscular Atrophy and it’s genetic form – Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Primary Lateral Sclerosis and then some other rare MNDs including Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia, Adult Tay-Sachs Disease, Multifocal Motor Neuropathy with Conduction Block (MMCB), and Monomelic Amyotrophy are also included.

  • 16. Neurodegenerative Disorders – Ataxic Disorders Part 1 51 min

    This module marks the beginning of the last topic under the neurodegenerative disorders – Ataxic Disorders or the disorders of cerebellum. It entails detailed discussion on the neuroanatomy, clinical presentation, classification, and epidemiology of Ataxias in general, followed by an elaborate exploration of the Acquired or secondary ataxias and the various Autosomal Recessive ataxias as well.

    This last module continues the discussion on Ataxic disorders covering the various Autosomal dominant ataxias, X-linked cerebellar ataxias, and the sporadic ataxias in detail. In the end, the diagnosis and management of ataxias are also discussed briefly.
